The Biggest Concert of the Year

Jay-Z and Kanye West kicked off their “Watch The Throne” tour last night at 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore. The crowd was treated to more than two hours of smash hits by both artists, including Jay-Z’s “Big Pimpin’,” “Empire State of Mind,” and “Encore,” as well as Kanye’s “Golddigger,” “Flashing Lights,” and “Good Life.”

According to fans who attended last night’s performance, the biggest concert of the year more than exceeded its hype.

Next week, the tour is making a two night stop at the World’s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden. I think it goes without saying that the November 7th and 8th performances will turn out to be a highlight of the tour.

2011’s Footloose

The remake of the popular 1984 musical-romance, Footloose, hit theatres Friday and has proved to be a success. The movie follows the same synopsis as the original: a Boston-bred rebel, Ren MacCormack (Kenny Wormald), moves to the Bible belt town of Bomont. As a result of a devastating car crash following a local dance, Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) and the Bomont town councilmen outlaw dancing and excessively loud music.  Unappeased by the new law, Ren straps on his dancing shoes and in the process of proving the normalcy of music and dance, wins the heart of Reverend Moore’s daughter, Ariel (Julianne Hough).

Today, the movie sits at number two in the box office behind Real Steel. Mixed reviews come from hard critics (found at metacritic.com) but a majority land in the upper 50%, while fan reviews have been consistently positive. Entertainment Weekly gave the film an “A-,” complementing its director, Craig Brewer, on pulling this film away from the original and establishing a “timeless zone in which children of all colors always yearn for freedom, and wise parents learn how to hand over the dance floor to the next generation.”

“we certainly hoped it would never come to this”

The 2011-2012 NBA season continues its downward spiral as it reaches its fourth month in the lockout. NBA commissioner, David Stern, recently cancelled the first two weeks of the regular season (November 1-14), which unfortunately may become the trend for many weeks to follow.

The lockout’s biggest obstacle? How to split $4 billion in basketball related income. That is, concession sales, parking, broadcast, etc. Owners want player revenue down 10% from last year’s agreement of 57%. Players are willing to reduce their share to 53%, a substantial cut as 1% of basketball related income is estimated to be worth about $40 million, but it just isn’t enough.

Players have been warned to prepare financially for a lost season, as they are expected to lose more than $350 million for every month lost. It may be hard for fans to “boo-hoo” over these multi-millionaire victims but it’s difficult to imagine losing a paycheck worth a weighty amount every two weeks. Here is a list of the NBA’s top 10 “Biggest Losers”:

9. Amare Stoudemire of the Knicks: $1,401,361.92

8. Carmelo Anthony of the Knicks: $1,423,076.92

7. Pau Gasol of the Lakers: $1,439,550

4. Kevin Garnett of the Celtics: $1,630,769.23

It’s going to take a lot more than sobbing sorrows through social media for players to regain trust and devotion from fans. A lockout like this may take years to rebuild. Mainly because the people who are getting hit the hardest are those who don’t play basketball at all. NBA staffers, arena employees and those who don’t play the sport but rely on it to live are in fact the “biggest losers.”

He Has Reached the Point of No Return

  George Lee Andrews will wrap up his career as Guinness World Record’s “longest-  running actor in the same Broadway show,” tomorrow night. Andrews has been with Phantom of the Opera since its opening night in 1988, marking his 9,382 show. The 68 year-old, Milwaukee native performed principal roles in shows such as Merlin, On the Twentieth Century, and A Little Night Music before becoming ever-so faithful to Phantom. Andrews will perform as Monsieur Andre, one of four roles played in his 23 years with the show. Andrews current role will be passed to son-in-law, Aaron Galligan-Stierle (Ragtime).

MSG Exclusive Tour

Madison Square Garden (MSG) is known as the” World’s Most Famous Arena,” but to be honest of late it has not lived up to that reputation. If you have been in the Garden in recent years you would notice how outdated a lot of the arena is from the hallways to the suites. With the great advancements in technology you would figure the World Most Famous Arena would use these technological advancements to their advantage and create a more fan friendly arena. The Garden has seen the positive responses from the public with renovations to other stadiums in the New York area like with the new Yankee Stadium and Citi Field. Madison Square Garden realized they were going to need to do some renovations as well in order to keep the title “World’s Most Famous Arena.”

Madison Square Garden is currently in the process of renovating the arena. MSG president and CEO said, “It’s a brand-new building inside the iconic skin of Madison Square Garden.” The Garden was completed in 1968 and has not had a major upgrade since 1991 so clearly renovations are needed.  The upgrade is going to cost $850 million dollars. The final renovations will be completed in 2013, and enough of the renovation will be completed before the upcoming NBA and NHL seasons in order for the Rangers and Knicks to play.

I was lucky enough to go on this exclusive tour of what MSG is going to look like when all the construction is done. When you first walk in you feel like you are about to be going on some ride at Disney land. The start of the tour began with a video of many different memorable moments the Garden has displayed for the world from concerts to sporting events. The video only starts after you remove a hockey puck from the wall and place it on a cylinder. This puck was referred to as the “Magical puck” throughout the tour hence the Disney land feeling.

The next part of the tour showcased a model of what the new arena was going to be like. The most interesting fact was the new arena is going to feature two bridges along the top where fans will have seats as well as be able to enjoy a beer without missing any action. The architect needed some structural support and came up with the idea of the brides because New York is known for its great suspension bridges.

The final part of the tour was about showcasing the new suites and the different luxurious advantages that are associated with each type of suite. The Garden designed this area to help sell the suites to potential clients. In the suites the Garden added a giant projection screen to the wall so prospective clients can better understand the perspective they will be seeing from the games if they purchased the suite. From what I saw on the tour and the pictures of what the final results should look like it seems like Madison Square Garden will deserve the name “The World Most Famous Arena” once again.
